RBC Canadian Open Preview Part 2 (RG10)

Flag Logo.png

Welcome to Part 2 of Ready Golf’s RBC Canadian Open coverage!

Late last week it was announced that another round of huge names would be making their way to the Hamilton Golf & Country Club. Justin Thomas, Sergio Garcia and Henrik Stenson will now be joining Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and a roster of other world-class PGA Tour talent as they compete for our national championship.

This week, we take a close look at what has become the strongest field the tournament has seen in years. First we run down all of the Canadian participants, including Adam Hadwin, Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes, and discuss who has the best chances of bringing the championship back home north of the border for the first time in 65 years. We then take the rest of the field into consideration and make our traditional head, heart and wildcard picks. Finally, we wrap up the episode with some spectator tips and strategies.

Heading down to the Open? Let us know who you are excited to see and what you’re looking forward to most at this year’s tournament.

Bonus Pod: Mr. Mickle Goes to Augusta (RG09)

Augusta 12.jpg

In a special bonus edition of Ready Golf, we talk to friend of the pod Boyd Mickle about his recent trip to Augusta National. Boyd had the privilege of playing the course just 10 days before the opening round of the Masters. From staying in the Eisenhower Cabin to teeing off with Adam Scott watching on, it really was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

This conversation was originally recorded with Boyd in Part 1 of our RBC Canadian Open Preview. Check back next week as we take a deep dive into the field in Part 2.

RBC Canadian Open Preview Part 1 (RG08)

With only two weeks to go until our national championship begins, Ready Golf kicks off this week with Part 1 of our RBC Canadian Open preview!

This episode covers a brief history of the historic event and outlines some major changes that are taking place this year; the first being the change in date, moving up to June from July. The second change is a shift in venue, returning to the Hamilton Golf & Country Club for the first time since 2012. We discuss the impact that both of these factors will have on this year’s tournament and how it has led to the strongest field of competition that we’ve seen in recent years.

We then take a deep dive into the venue. Eric, Brent and John traveled down to Ancaster and were joined by member Boyd Mickle as he took the guys on a course tour and recorded a live interview on location. Boyd has been a member at Hamilton G&CC for over 30 years and was able to share some first hand experience with the course, its evolution, and the impact of hosting a PGA Tour event. A one-time competitive golfer himself, Boyd also regaled us with some unbelievable stories about playing some of golf’s most famous venues, such as Royal County Downs, Augusta National and Whistling Straits, as well as run-ins with past and present PGA Tour pros.

Click through the photos above to see some of our shots of the course from our tour. Special thanks to Boyd & the Hamilton Golf & Country Club for their hospitality!

Join us next week for Part 2 of our Canadian Open preview as we shift our focus to the players, picking our favourites and adding insights on what we’ll be watching out for.

PGA Championship Recap (RG07)

(Patrick Smith/Getty Images)

(Patrick Smith/Getty Images)

It was another exciting week on tour with Brooks Koepka continuing his dominance to defend his title at the PGA Championship. The win was Brooks’ 4th career major, which puts him in some pretty elite company.

With Brent away on vacation, Ready Golf is pleased to introduce you to guest host John Wearing, who will be assisting with our PGA Championship coverage. John will be joining the guys at Ready Golf moving forward as a frequent co-host, contributor, and all-around good guy. But fear not fans of oversized gingers, we also managed to bring Brent in all the way from Hilton Head Island, South Carolina!

This episode we spend a bit of time getting to know John, catching up with Brent, and (eventually) getting to our PGA Championship recap, which includes:

  • Brooks’ historic run

  • DJ making it interesting

  • Did Jordan Spieth finally figure it out?

  • What’s the deal with Phil’s gum??

Destination Golf with TJ Rule (RG03)

st andrews with logo.png

Ready Golf is back! Apologies to those who were looking for an episode last week. We had a really great Masters recap recorded but unfortunately, due to some tech issues, were unable to get it posted. Though we covered a lot and are absolutely brimming with takes after an unbelievable week, here are the highlights:

·      Masters = amazing
·      Tiger = incredible
·      Correy Conners = proud

Moving into this week, there were some big headlines in the Canadian golf scene with Brigitte Thibault winning her first individual NCAA title at the Mountain West Championship. Check out our interview with Brigitte back in Episode 1! Additionally, Brooke Henderson continued to see success this season as she defended her title at the Lotte Championship in Hawaii. This is her 8th career victory, tying her with Sandra Post for the most all-time career wins by a Canadian on the LPGA tour.

Back home in Ontario, the weather has finally improved and the first long weekend of the spring gave Eric the opportunity to get out on the course! We discuss the ups and downs of his first round and then set out some goals and things we’re working on for 2019.

Even though spring has arrived, it is still very much the shoulder season for most of Canada with many golfers still eager to get out for the first time of the year. With that in mind, we bring in travel expert TJ Rule from Golf Away Tours to talk about some destination golf options. TJ discusses some warm weather locations as well as some Europe trips that you still have time to plan for this summer.
